Winter Star Party 2002

by Tom Massey

Several RAC members attended the Winter Star party this past February. While there we spent a considerable amount of time observing planets and recording them as well. Below are two images of Jupiter and Saturn. Click on them to view a larger image.

Saturn021402.jpg (91356 bytes)

These were images taken on video through a 14" Celestron using a Sony DCR TRV-9 digital video camera. The images are both composited images of 9 and ten frames, processed and stacked in AstroStack (freeware) and Adobe Photoshop. Photos by Tom Massey, Alan Traino and mark Hettinger all working in concert to get them. The planetary shots are afocal through a 55mm Plossl eyepiece using the zoom of the video camera to increase the apparent focal length of the system.

Below is a shot of the crown jewel of the southern sky, Omega Centauri. This is a hand held digital image through my 20" Reflector using an Olympus C-2100UZ camera afocal through an I3Piece intensified eyepiece.  Click on the image to view a larger version.
