Special Guest Lecturer:
Dr. Allyson Sheffield
Merging Galaxies – Building the Milky Way
Dr. Sheffield’s research focuses mainly on Galactic Archaeology. She uses large sky surveys such as Gaia and APOGEE to study stellar streams in the Milky Way, which provide clues to our Galaxy’s past. She also works on SETI searches for technosignatures on exoplanets.
This talk is a deep dive into the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus merger with the early Milky Way and the eventual Milky Way-Andromeda collision.
About the Speaker
Dr. Allyson Sheffield is a professor of physics, astronomy, and astrobiology at CUNY LaGuardia Community College. She is the deputy director of the M.S. in Astrophysics program at the CUNY graduate center.
